He completed U.S. Army Airborne and Ranger Schools, and served as an infantry officer. Crouch left the Army in the post-Gulf War downsizing in order to pursue more adventurous interests, most notably in high-stakes international alpine climbing, and he developed a particular fascination with the majestic peaks of Patagonia. Along the way he became a writer. Crouch’s book, Enduring Patagonia (Random House, 2001) was selected for the Barnes & Noble “Discover Great New Writers” program. After Patagonia, Crouch fell in love with the true-life WWII flying adventure that, with eight years of writing and research, became China’s Wings (Bantam, 2012). He regularly reviews books for The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post and is the author of The Bonanza King , which will be published by Scribner in June 2018.
