Though writer Steve Niles is best known these days for creating the 30 Days of Night series, the original three issues of which appeared in 2002 and made their way to the big screen courtesy of Hard Candy (2005) director David Slade in 2007, and for generally being credited with bringing horror comics back to prominence, it is his other long standing creation, hard boiled private investigator Cal McDonald, who for my money is the more interesting proposition.
Described by his creator Niles as “the screwed up cousin of Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe”, McDonald is a hard drinking, violent ex-junkie who specialises in paranormal cases of which, in his version of Los Angeles, there are many thanks to the abundance of monsters, demons and ghouls that inhabit the darker reaches of the city. Aided by his undead right hand man Mo’lock, McDonald has been investigating the unusual for over two decades, first appearing in a 1990 story called Big Head, and the events of Steve Niles’s latest outing for the gruesome gumshoe, The Iron Spirit (a 32 page one-shot published by Dark Horse comics on 12th September 2012), are as strange as they’ve ever been.
Approached by a war veteran with a past as haunted as his own, McDonald finds himself in an underground military base that was once home to a series of experiments carried out on US soldiers, and is forced to deal with issues of mortality that, having recently become undead himself, are uncomfortably close to home.
Nile’s writing on The Iron Spirit is as crisp, precise and punchy as ever, every word of McDonald’s familiar noir narration soaked in whiskey and cigarette smoke, but the artwork by Eisner nominated artist Scott Morse is simply stunning. Morse brings the story alive in pencil and watercolours, lending it an almost ethereal quality that, combined with the typewriter typeface used to tell Cal’s tale, leaves the reader simultaneously satisfied and in need of a shower at the conclusion to wash away the sense of grime and claustrophobia that the art very effectively evokes.
The Iron Spirit is published as a deluxe hardcover edition, with two pages of notes by artist Scott Morse which give a fascinating insight into the creative process, and is yet another worthy addition to the Cal McDonald / Criminal Macabre canon. Those previously unfamiliar with McDonald will have no trouble jumping aboard with this story, and will no doubt then want to explore the murky, troubled and entertaining back catalogue of Steve Niles’s defective detective. Perfect for those who like their crime stories to be hard hitting, hard boiled and not merely noir, but positively pitch black.
